How to choose the right mobility aid

Level of support

Decide whether light one-sided support, unloading one leg or greater stability from a walker or rollator is required.

Indoors or outdoors

Consider surfaces, thresholds, door widths, stairs and whether the mobility aid needs to be transported.

Height and adjustment

Handles should adjust to the user’s height and posture without raised shoulders or excessive forward bending.

Weight and physical ability

Check the weight capacity and whether the person can safely lift, steer, brake and fold the selected model.

Compare the main types

Walkers

Provide a wide base of support and high stability. Fixed models are lifted, while two-wheel walkers move forward more easily.

Rollators

Support more independent mobility. They have wheels and hand brakes, with some models adding a seat, basket or transport-chair function.

Walking sticks

Provide additional one-sided support. Options include standard, folding, tripod, quadripod and specialised designs.

Crutches

Used when greater unloading and control are required. Choice depends on the prescription, balance and upper-body strength.

A mobility aid must be correctly adjusted and used on a suitable surface. Seek clinical assessment after recent surgery, with severe pain, repeated falls or a sudden change in walking ability.

Not sure which mobility aid is suitable?

Tell us how the person currently moves, where the aid will be used, approximate height and weight, and whether there are balance or upper-limb difficulties.

Mobility aids through the Bulgarian NHIF

A mobility aid may be supplied when the relevant medical indications and documentation requirements are met. The specific type and model must correspond to the prescription, individual needs and current NHIF specification. We can help you check the applicable procedure.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether a walking stick, crutches, walker or rollator is needed?

Choice depends on the required support, balance, ability to bear weight through the legs, upper-body strength and environment. When uncertain, assessment by a clinician or rehabilitation professional is appropriate.

How is the correct height determined?

In an upright position, the handle is commonly adjusted to allow slight elbow flexion and relaxed shoulders. Exact adjustment depends on the product and individual posture.

Which aid is most suitable outdoors?

It depends on the surface, distance, thresholds and steering ability. A rollator with suitable wheels and brakes is often practical outdoors, but is not right for every person.

Does maximum user weight need to be checked?

Yes. The user must be within the stated capacity of the model. For a higher body weight, select an aid with suitable capacity and dimensions.

Can a mobility aid be used without adjustment?

This is not recommended. Incorrect height or technique can reduce stability and place unnecessary strain on the wrists, shoulders and back.

Can a mobility aid be obtained through the Bulgarian NHIF?

This may be possible when the relevant medical indications and documents are present. The prescribed type and selected model must meet the current NHIF specification.
