How to choose a walking stick
Required stability
A single-point stick provides light additional support, while tripod and quadripod models offer a wider base.
Height and side
The height should allow a natural posture and slight elbow flexion. The appropriate side depends on the individual difficulty.
Handle and tip
The handle should be comfortable for the hand, while the rubber tip should provide stable contact with the surface.
Capacity and intended use
Check maximum user weight and whether the stick is intended for walking support, travel or orientation with visual impairment.
Compare the main walking-stick types
Single-point walking stick
Light and convenient for everyday additional support when a wider base is not required.
Tripod or quadripod stick
The wider base provides additional stability. Check its size and ensure it does not interfere with normal stepping.
Folding walking stick
Practical for transport and occasional use. All sections must be fully opened and securely connected before use.
Specialised walking stick
Lights or alarms add convenience, while a white cane for visual impairment is primarily an orientation aid with a different purpose.
Regularly inspect the rubber tip, adjustment mechanism and connections. A white cane for visual impairment should not automatically be treated as a weight-bearing mobility aid unless the manufacturer specifies that purpose.
Not sure which walking stick is suitable?
Tell us the person’s height and weight, the required support, which hand will be used and whether the stick should fold or include a specialised feature.

Walking sticks through the Bulgarian NHIF
A walking stick may be supplied when the relevant medical indications, prescription and documentation are present. The type and specific model must correspond to the individual needs and current NHIF specification.
Frequently asked questions
How is the correct walking-stick height determined?
In an upright position, the handle is commonly adjusted so the shoulder remains relaxed and the elbow slightly flexed. Follow the instructions for the specific model.
On which side should the walking stick be held?
It is often used on the side opposite the weaker or painful leg, but correct technique depends on the condition and should be confirmed by a clinician or rehabilitation professional.
When is a tripod or quadripod stick appropriate?
When a wider base of support is required. It must be correctly oriented and should not obstruct stepping or leg movement.
Is a folding walking stick safe?
Yes, when fully opened, all sections are securely connected and the mechanism is undamaged. Check the connections before each use.
How often should the rubber tip be replaced?
Replace it when visibly worn, cracked, hardened or offering reduced grip. Inspect it regularly and after use on rough surfaces.
Can a walking stick be obtained through the Bulgarian NHIF?
This may be possible with the relevant medical indications and documents. The selected stick must correspond to the prescribed aid and current NHIF specification.
