How to choose a rollator

Brakes and control

Check whether the person can comfortably reach and operate the hand brakes and apply the parking function before sitting.

Surfaces and wheels

For outdoor use, consider wheel size and type, movement over uneven surfaces and stability along the usual route.

Width and folding

Compare the overall width with doors and lifts, and check folded dimensions if the rollator will be transported in a car.

Seat and weight capacity

If the seat will be used, check its width and height, the maximum user weight and the stability of the frame.

Four-wheel rollator

Offers good stability, hand brakes and, depending on the model, a seat and basket. Suitability indoors and outdoors depends on the wheels.

Three-wheel rollator

More compact and manoeuvrable in narrow spaces. It commonly has no seat and requires good steering ability.

Bariatric rollator

A reinforced frame with higher weight capacity and greater width. Carefully compare its dimensions with doors and the intended environment.

Two-in-one rollator

Combines walking support with a transport function on specific models. Use the attendant function only according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Before sitting, apply the parking brakes and place the rollator on a level surface. A standard rollator must not be used as a wheelchair unless the model has an explicitly stated transport function.

Rollators through the Bulgarian NHIF

A rollator may be supplied when it corresponds to the medical prescription, indications and required documentation. The specific model must match the individual needs and current NHIF specification. Additional features or price differences are checked for the individual case.

What is the difference between a three-wheel and a four-wheel rollator?

A three-wheel model is generally more compact and manoeuvrable but often has no seat. A four-wheel model provides a wider base of support and more features but requires more space.

How is the correct handle height determined?

Adjust both handles evenly for the user’s height and posture, allowing slight elbow flexion and relaxed shoulders. Follow the model instructions.

Can the person sit on the rollator?

Only if the model has a seat intended for this purpose. Apply the parking brakes and place the rollator on a level, stable surface before sitting.

Can a rollator be used as a wheelchair?

A standard rollator is not designed to transport a seated person. This is permitted only for a model with an explicitly stated transport function and according to its instructions.

What should be checked regularly?

Check brake operation, tyres and wheels, adjustment mechanisms, folding, the seat and the attachment of the basket or bag.

Can a rollator be obtained through the Bulgarian NHIF?

This may be possible with the relevant medical indications, prescription and documents. The model must correspond to the prescribed aid and current NHIF specification.
