How to choose an orthopaedic sleeping pillow

Sleeping position

Choice depends on whether you sleep on your back, side or change position, and how much head and neck support is required.

Height and shape

The pillow should fill the space between the head and mattress without bending the neck excessively up or down.

Material and firmness

Memory foam conforms to the head and neck, but the preferred firmness and support are individual.

Specific need

For an anti-snore design, check its intended use and remember that a pillow does not replace clinical assessment for suspected sleep apnoea.

Compare the main options

Profiled neck pillow

Its shape supports head and neck positioning. Suitable height depends on sleeping position, shoulder width and mattress.

Memory foam orthopaedic pillow

Conforms to the body and provides even support. Check dimensions, height and cover.

Anti-snore pillow

The specialised shape supports a particular sleeping position. Results vary and it is not a treatment for sleep apnoea.

An orthopaedic pillow may improve support and comfort, but it does not by itself treat neck conditions or sleep disorders. Seek medical advice for persistent pain, numbness, heavy snoring or pauses in breathing.

Orthopaedic sleeping pillows and the NHIF

Standard orthopaedic sleeping pillows are not automatically equivalent to a pressure-relieving cushion prescribed through the Bulgarian NHIF. If you have a medical protocol or TELK/NELK decision, we can check whether the prescription and specific product fall within the current specification.

Frequently asked questions

What orthopaedic pillow height is suitable?

It depends on sleeping position, shoulder width and how far the body sinks into the mattress. The aim is to keep the head and neck naturally aligned.

Is memory foam suitable for everyone?

Not necessarily. Memory foam conforms to the body, but preferences for firmness, temperature and support vary.

How long does it take to adjust to a profiled pillow?

Some people need a short adaptation period. Stop using it and seek advice if pain, numbness or significant discomfort increases.

Does an anti-snore pillow guarantee that snoring will stop?

No. It may support a particular position, but results vary. Heavy snoring and pauses in breathing may require clinical assessment.

How should a memory foam pillow be cleaned?

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. The cover can commonly be removed and washed separately, while the foam itself should not be washed in a way that damages it.

Are orthopaedic sleeping pillows funded by the Bulgarian NHIF?

Not automatically. The NHIF has an item for a prescribed pressure-relieving cushion, but a specific sleeping pillow must match the medical prescription and current specification.
