Decide whether support is needed for heels, hands, knees, neck or back, or whether assistance with body repositioning is required.

Mobility and care

Consider whether the person moves independently and how an attendant performs repositioning, hygiene and daily care.

Size and stability

The cushion should support the intended area without creating an unstable or forced position.

Check cleaning instructions and regularly inspect the skin in contact and surrounding areas.

For heels, hands and local areas

Compact products for supporting a specific sensitive area. Placement should remain stable and be checked regularly.

For knees and assisted turning

Support limb separation or assist an attendant when changing the person’s position.

Used to support the back or legs and maintain a position according to individual needs.

The right cushion is one part of an overall care plan. It does not replace regular skin checks, appropriate repositioning or clinical assessment when redness, broken skin or a wound is present.

Positioning and pressure-relieving cushions through the NHIF

The Bulgarian NHIF provides funding for a prescribed pressure-relieving cushion when the relevant indications and documents are present. Not every positioning aid automatically falls under this item. We can check whether the specific need and selected product correspond to the prescription and current specification.

Can one cushion be used for every body area?

No. Shape, size and material must suit the area and purpose. Incorrect placement can create pressure elsewhere.

How often should the skin be checked?

Skin should be inspected regularly according to the individual risk and care plan, including the areas around the cushion.

Does a turning cushion replace an attendant?

No. It is an aid for specific handling tasks. Technique must be safe and appropriate for the person’s condition and the attendant’s abilities.

How do I choose a positioning wedge?

Choice depends on the area, required height and angle, stability and available bed space. It should not force the body into an unsuitable position.

Are all positioning cushions funded by the Bulgarian NHIF?

No. The NHIF funds a prescribed product from its current specification. The specific product must be checked against the prescribed pressure-relieving cushion.
